Returning to education is commonplace these days and there are lots of options for those who need to balance training and education with work, family life and childcare.
We offer a wide range of Access to Higher Education (HE) Diplomas designed to fit around your lifestyle. The Diploma is designed for adults aged 19+ who have been out of full time education for some time and can provide a progression route to undergraduate study at college or university.
Access to HE Diplomas are one year, full time or part time and are nationally recognised Level 3 qualifications, validated by the awarding body OCN (Open College Network).
Applicants may be required to sit separate GCSEs in English Language and Mathematics in conjunction with their course if they do not already have these qualifications at grade C/4 or above. This will enhance progression opportunities.
Progression
Upon successful completion you can apply to undergraduate courses offered by universities and colleges including the South Thames Colleges Group. There are many reasons to continue your studies with us, notably our undergraduate courses offer lower tuition fees providing excellent value and our class sizes are smaller.
You are advised to check that you meet specific university entrance requirements for the course you plan to study on completion of your Access to HE Diploma, as these will vary from one course to another. For some courses, compulsory subject requirements may also apply.
Advanced Learner Loans
If you are aged 19 or over, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help pay Tuition Fees charged by the College. It is easy to apply, your household income is not taken into account and there is no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £25,725 per annum and repayments do not start until the April of the year following the course end.
If you go on to complete an undergraduate programme, the Access loan will not have to be repaid – it is written off!
To apply you will need to be issued with a Learning and Funding letter by Admissions; this is normally issued on successful completion of your interview. For further information visit www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan.
Study Skills
All Access to HE Diplomas have Study Skills modules which are designed to provide students with essential skills underpinning learning on the course and in undergraduate study, for example note-taking, research and presentation skills.
In a series of videos following an exhibition, Transforming the Everyday, Access to Art & Design and Foundation Diploma Art & Design students explain the concept and design process, the techniques and software they chose, exploring new mediums, working with photography, textiles, collage, silk screen print and 3D Design, how to effectively display their work, and how the course is helping them to find their style.

With that in mind partners across Kingston borough came together to host a virtual one day event, which provided residents with information and advice on securing new employment, re-training or re-skilling or considering a career change.
Recordings of the sessions from the event on 23 June can be viewed below by clicking on the link:
Are you passionate about joining the thriving and innovative games design industry? With a diverse range of career paths available, this industry is perfect for those who possess technical, analytical abilities, and natural creativity. As a game designer, you will be at the heart of game production, focusing on game functionality, creating systems, rules, and gameplay, and contributing to world-building to ensure the game is engaging and fun.
Students will be taught to master creating high-quality 3D models and textures using PBR methods, animate high-fidelity rigs, and comprehend industry-standard lighting and rendering techniques with tools like Arnold and V-Ray. You will learn to be proficient in software including Zbrush, Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Substance Painter, Unreal Engine, and Autodesk Maya, alongside a historical overview of the videogame industry's evolution, including its merger with VFX and film. The skills acquired are applicable across various creative fields, making the Level 3 Games Design qualification a gateway to degree pathways in games design, graphic design, digital media, motion graphics, computer animation, visual effects, architectural visualisation, and product design.
CASE STUDY
Akim Cole studied a Level 3 in Creative Media (Games Design). He is now studying a BSC (Hons) in Character Creation for Animation, Games and VFX at Escape Studios.
“I gained valuable skills at South Thames College by working with both free software like Blender and industry-standard tools like Zbrush, Maya and Unreal. This enabled me to comfortably learn a unique skill every day as I prepared for university. I’m now leading character creation for a group project and recently completed a game-ready character in two weeks, reaching a milestone. This was possible due to the effective time management and software optimisation skills I had learned at College.
Now, I can assist my teammates with other artistic elements efficiently, thanks to Shakil’s teaching."

Each of our colleges has a dedicated team of SEN professionals who work closely with students and their families to ensure they get the individualised support they need to transition confidently and thrive on the course they have chosen.
In addition to the pastoral and academic support provided within our mainstream programmes and the extensive practical and wellbeing support offered by our Student services team, each learner with an EHCP works directly with a specialist progress coordinator. The progress coordinator will ensure the student has access to the provisions outlined in their EHCP, monitor and review their support needs and liaise with the Local Authority to manage their annual review.
Progress coordinators also ensure that learners receive the support or adjustments they need to access examinations and other assessments.
We are also the only FE college in London that has its own in-house therapy team, offering Speech & Language and Occupational Therapy. (Link to therapy team webpage).
The needs of new students are carefully assessed by progress coordinators, tutors and therapists, who work closely with the young person and their family to create a three-year Progression Pathway.
Day-to-day support in class is provided by our learning coaches, who work with the mainstream curriculum teams and progress coordinators to ensure students with additional needs are supported effectively to build their confidence and learning skills.
When learners with an EHCP or additional needs apply to the college, the Inclusion Team will contact them directly to discuss their support needs. If you would like further information before making an application, you can contact them using the telephone number or email address below.

Good Mental Health and Wellbeing has never been so important for employers
All businesses can be affected by mental health in the workplace and now require an understanding of the issues that are needed to support their staff.
It is estimated that one in four* of us will experience a mental health problem in our lifetime, whilst one in six of us report a common mental health problem such as anxiety or depression each week in England alone. It is critical therefore that you have trained and knowledgeable experts within your organisation who understand that the prevention of mental and physical ill health and promotion of mental health and wellbeing is far better than a sole focus on curing illness.
Employees come away feeling prepared and confident with the appropriate tools and resources to support one another in the workplace.
We have a number of online and face to face courses that will enable your workforce, to enhance skills, retrain or progress in this area.

In partnership with Middlesex University and Cass Art, South Thames College celebrated the winner of its inaugural Design Competition in February. Over 70 students participated in the competition through workshops delivered by Chenika Allen during the Autumn Term. A shortlist of students was then invited to participate in workshops at Middlesex University, where they explored creative options in higher education.
The students took part in screen printing workshops at Middlesex's Design Studios, gained insights from academics and current Middlesex students, and eagerly awaited the grand reveal from Chenika. The overall winner was Sara Abdalla from Ricards Lodge School, for her t-shirt design and brand, Mindfull.
Mindfull is a mental health-focused clothing brand for teenagers, promoting positivity through its slogan, “Look at the glass half full.” Featuring butterfly motifs symbolizing resilience, the brand prioritizes oversized t-shirts for comfort and self-expression.
Sara won an iPad, an Apple Pen, and design goodies courtesy of Cass Art and Middlesex University. The runner-up was Alisha Ashraf (Ricards Lodge), and third place went to Rania Bourouba (Dunraven School).
Claire Lewis, Director of Graphic Design and Illustration at Middlesex University, said, "Being part of the competition and seeing the incredible work that the students produced was an absolute pleasure. The students did a fantastic job, showcasing just how much creative potential is out there. I look forward to welcoming them back to Middlesex when the time comes for them to choose where to study for their degree."
Jitka Zenatova, Design and Technology teacher from Ricards Lodge, said, “It has been an excellent design competition which has really sparked my students’ wider interests in the creative industries and post-16 and post-18 pathways.”
South Thames College is grateful to all partners and stakeholders who supported the delivery of this competition. This marks the second competition the schools' partnership team has delivered since 2023-2024.
We look forward to expanding these kinds of opportunities as part of our schools partnership offer, supporting schools in their engagement with colleges, universities, and employers, and broadening students’ understanding of the opportunities available to them.

Workshops were delivered by Kingston College teaching staff and the schools partnership team.
The shortlisted Year 10 students were joined by award winning author Kiran Millwood Hargrave who spoke about her writing journey, habits and offered some invaluable advice about how writers can eventually get published.
Amongst the Deer, by Florence Lavercombe (Grey Court School)
Heart, by Clara Capgras (Raynes Park High School)
A memorable trip that only happened once, by Chris Lam (Epsom and Ewell High School)
The winning writer Florence said:
"Thank you so much for creating a competition for me to focus on my writing and share my work. The prize is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I cannot wait to have. Thank you."
Yasmin Laws, KS3 and KS4 English Coordinator from Grey Court School, added:
"This was such a fantastic opportunity for our students to be brave and vulnerable. I'm so proud of all the students who put their work out there for critique and very thankful to Richard and the Kingston College team for giving them this opportunity. "
Richard Fisher, School Partnership Manager at Kingston College, said that it has been a joy to deliver the competition and witness the enthusiasm, honesty and bravery demonstrated by all the writers who submitted, not just the shortlisted.
Thank you to all our partners who supported the delivery of the competition.
Snap.
A twig broke. The boy’s ears pricked up, eyes widening in anticipation. He stood up straight, head whipping around fiercely in a desperate attempt to locate where the sound originated from.
Snap.
It came from his left.
Snap.
No, his right.
There, a flash of red scurried through the undergrowth. The boy tried to follow the shape with his eyes, but it vanished as if into thin air. What was it? A bird? A fox? He could feel his heart drumming in his chest.
Snap. Behind him this time. The boy spun around violently.
A girl. There, behind him, stood a girl, with a mane of fiery red hair and vast brown eyes. She couldn’t have been much older than the boy. She held herself in a strange manner, akin to that of a young child. The boy let out a deep breath of relief before letting his eyes scan over her, noticing the clothes she was wearing: a grey long-sleeve wool top despite it being the peak of summer, and a pair of brown jeans that seemed a few sizes too small. The boy felt warm just looking at her. He also noticed that she didn't have any shoes on; a layer of mud caked the soles of her feet. However he dismissed the girl’s unusual appearance and took a few paces towards her, attempting to introduce himself. The girl’s eyes widened fearfully as she took hurried steps backwards, tripping over a protruding tree stump and landing in an awkward shape amongst the shrubbery.
Chuckling slightly, the boy offered her a hand up, and reluctantly, the girl took it.
Not long after that, the two became friends. The boy rambled to the girl about his thoughts, hopes, and dreams, and she simply listened. He soon realised that the girl didn’t have much to say at all, however it seemed neither of them minded: the boy would talk and the girl would listen, and that is how it stayed.
Every day for weeks, the boy and the girl met in those woods. Each time the sun rose, an adventure would begin. Perhaps they skipped stones in the pond, or fought with branches that felt as heavy as steel in their hands. Maybe the boy braided her hair, speaking fondly of his sisters as he twined small flowers in her curls, or lounged in a clearing, painting and singing and dancing for as long as their feet could hold them up. When the sky melted into hues of pinks and oranges and the deer retired amongst the trees, they parted ways, promising to see each other again tomorrow.
It didn’t take long for him to notice the green and purple shades that blossomed against her skin. It was clear that the girl had desperately tried to cover them up with her wool sleeves and tight jeans, but he had still seen the way the bruises peeked over the collar of her shirt, unmissable and ugly. He wanted to ask where she came from, or more about who she was, but each attempt was met with her facing away and shaking her head.
On one sultry afternoon, the girl stood up from where they sat beside the stream and gestured for him to follow, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. She led the boy down narrow paths shrouded by harsh brambles and tracks so wide you could fully outstretch your arms and you would only be able to graze the surrounding foliage with your fingertips. The boy watched from behind as the girl hiked over fallen trees and logs, her steps never faltering. She seemed more in her element here, sunlight caressing her face and hair swept back by a breeze, and a sense of comfort lingering hazily on her features. Then without warning, she stopped, so suddenly that the boy bumped into her back.
The boy gasped. They had made it to a boundless field that stretched long into the horizon, every blade of grass ignited by the setting sun. A small herd of deer, grazing lazily to their right, swiftly craned their necks in the children’s direction and stood stock still, clearly intrigued by their presence. As if on instinct, the girl lowered her head and the boy, realising her intentions, quickly followed suit. She walked over to a fawn and its mother with a striking confidence, as if they were old friends reunited. The boy watched dumbfounded as she glided her hand over the back of the deer, grinning wildly as she did so. The girl waved him over, snapping him back to reality. He approached with immense caution and the girl giggled, amused by his unease. All of a sudden, she took his hand in hers and dragged it gently over the deer’s fur. The boy, expecting coarse bristles like a paintbrush, was startled by how soft the fur felt under his touch. He was pleasantly surprised.
But now, the boy stood in the clearing, head thrown back to face the sky. He welcomed its warm embrace and took a deep breath in, his eyes feeling heavy and ponderous. He remembered the way the girl had come running to him the previous morning, tears flowing down her cheeks, mixing with the blood that ran down from a large cut on her forehead. The girl threw herself into his arms sobbing like he’d never heard before, crying out like a wounded animal. It broke his heart. She said that she had to go. He looked deep into her eyes, filled to the brim with anguish. He told her to promise she’d come back. The girl simply shook her head.
So there the boy stood, crickets chirping a soulful melody below him.
Snap.
He turned slowly, tears gathering mournfully in his eyes. Behind him, timid and hunched over, stood a small fox with a mane of fiery red fur and vast brown eyes.

The STC Resilience Weeks Event showcased a series of workshops and activities designed to empower students to navigate life's challenges, foster connections, build positive relationships, and enhance their inner strength. These sessions equipped participants with practical strategies for resilience both in college and beyond. Workshops covered a diverse range of topics, including self-care, healthy relationships, stress management, growth mindset, insights into careers from Wandsworth Council, bystander training, and first aid from St Johns Ambulance.
In addition to these educational sessions, we organised various engaging activities throughout the week that promoted resilience through fun physical challenges, focusing on coordination, balance, stamina, and endurance. Student feedback from the career insights session was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees described it as "inspiring and insightful," with Council members sharing vital employability skills, interview tips, and personal career journeys.
The discussion emphasised resilience, confidence-building, and effective strategies for overcoming workplace challenges. An interactive quiz and Q&A further engaged students, reinforcing the importance of adaptability and perseverance in achieving success. An ESOL lecturer highlighted the impact of the Growth Mindset session, noting a remarkable change in student participation: "One student, who has NEVER volunteered an answer in a class feedback session before, actively contributed after attending the workshop."
Other event highlights included our Resilience Fair and the Resilience Quest, with the event culminating in the increasingly popular Double Dutch Open Activity—a creative approach to promoting both physical and emotional well-being. Overall, the STC Resilience Weeks Event successfully fostered a supportive community and provided invaluable resources for our students' personal and professional growth.
