As part of their work experience, BTEC Level 3 Art & Design learners are helping to design artworks for Buckland Wharf in Kingston Town Centre. This is a collaboration between Kingston Council, Kingston Museum, Hayatsu Architects and Kingston College. A collection of these artworks will be selected to be cast into metal plaques that will be displayed under Kingston Bridge as part of the public realm improvement works.
Julian McCarthy, local historian from Kingston Tour Guides, took the learners on an insightful tour of Kingston Riverside and Kingston Museum. He talked about themes of work for the plaques and delved into the history of the town and river.
In January, Hayatsu Architects will bring sandboxes to College for the learners to draw their designs into. Artworks will be recorded and the finalists selected with plaques being installed later in the year. We are very excited to see the final outcomes of this brief and what designs have been created using the river themes!
Special thanks to Kingston Council for including us in this regeneration project. Thank you, Julian for all your knowledge and energy, and Takeshi Hayatsu, Director of Hayatsu Architects, for facilitating the work and for the inspiration.
