Meet Yvonne, Access to Science, who says her confidence has soared, she believes in herself and the things she can achieve.
“As a mature student, returning to education was an important but nerve-racking step for me. As my children got older, I had the time to test the waters. Kingston College is local to me, also my daughter attended many years ago, she did well and enjoyed her time there. It was logical for me to take the first step here.
“I first came to Kingston College in 2023 to study Maths and English GCSE. A fellow English student was also studying Access to HE Science and told me of the course and his future plans. I was intrigued. I decided to pursue a pathway I had always wanted but never thought I could. To obtain a place on the Access to HE Science course, I gained two Science GCSEs, in 2024/2025.
“The Access to HE - Science course is the crucial step into my chosen university, Roehampton, where I have accepted a place to study BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Health. The units of the Access course line up beautifully with the modules of the university course providing me with a firm base to begin.
“The course is at times intense and challenging but also fascinating and rewarding. The hard work pays off in full. I have thoroughly enjoyed classroom-based study. The interaction with fellow students with different educational backgrounds and perspectives helps with learning; and the patience of the teachers is comforting as ‘no question is too silly’ (for which I have many).
“I have gained valuable skills during my time on the Access course: computer skills and presenting skills, both will be essential for me as my journey progresses. Most of all, my confidence has soared. I believe in myself and the things I can achieve.
“I would certainly recommend the Access to Science course, no matter where you're starting from, the opportunity is always there and the door is always open, take a step and walk through it.”
