“I would say someone who is thinking about pursuing a BTEC in Business should absolutely go for it! GCSEs were not my greatest strength but the way the BTEC course was structured allowed me to achieve better results”, says BTEC Level 3 in Business student, Adam, who achieved D*D*D*, equivalent to 3 A* grades at A Level. Adam is continuing his studies at Kingston University on their BSc (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship.
Why did you choose your course and Kingston College?
I chose my course because it was a full time BTEC. After learning about BTECs from a friend who told me how enjoyable it was, I became very intrigued by the concept and decided to pursue a course in business. Rather than being limited to exams or coursework, my BTEC Level 3 Course blended the two perfectly and allowed me to function in a better environment. I picked Kingston College because I believe it had lots of potential in the way it functions and operates. It felt like the college treated you as an individual adult with freedom, once you completed your work at a high standard and kept up with deadlines. This approach felt much more freeing than secondary school or if I went to sixth form.
What attracted you to studying a BTEC rather than A Levels?
What attracted me to studying a BTEC instead of A Levels was how the course operated. Rather than having to choose 3 separate subjects, the BTEC allowed me to pursue one subject (in my case, business) in a much broader style. Because I was able to do a full time course I learnt about key aspects of business such as finance, marketing, management and organisational skills in a much more in-depth and extensive way. I also enjoyed the structure of the course. For example, in Level 3 you do both exams and coursework which is great because if you are not the best at exams you can make up for it through coursework and vice versa. I also believe BTECs have much more practical applications to jobs, apprenticeships and universities.
What are your plans after you finish your course?
I am going to Kingston University to study BSc (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship. My goal is to build an extensive career and a strong set of skills so I can successfully venture off into different industries which I believe I can do by expanding my repertoire and becoming specialised in many business avenues.
What would you say to someone thinking about studying your course?
I would say someone who is thinking about pursuing a BTEC in Business should absolutely go for it! GCSEs were not my greatest strength but the way my BTEC course was structured including the practicality and efficiency, allowed me to achieve better results and show my true ability in a progressive environment. Studying Business is something you will never regret and it allows you to specialise or become well-rounded (or in some cases both). I believe it is a course that is suitable for anyone, regardless of their style of learning.
