Safeguarding

First-year BTEC Level 3 Digital Art, Animation & Games Design students at Kingston College have been working alongside the MET Police on a community-focused prevention campaign aimed at raising awareness of theft from person and retail theft across Kingston town centre.

As part of the project, students were challenged to create a range of motion graphics, posters and animated crime prevention messages to help educate residents and visitors on how to stay safe and protect their belongings.

Working from a real-life brief provided by Kingston Town Centre Police officers, students explored local theft hotspots, reviewed crime prevention research and gained valuable insight into the challenges facing the local community. Their creative work was developed using real case studies and information gathered during police-led walkabouts around Kingston.

The campaign supports the MET Police's MET Engage platform, which is used to share safety messages and strengthen engagement with local communities.

The students' animations were displayed on the Met Police engagement vehicle in Kingston town centre as part of a public engagement event, helping to spread practical crime prevention advice to hundreds of people. Their posters and graphics will continue to be used

This collaborative project provided students with valuable industry experience, allowing them to apply their digital design skills to a live client brief while making a positive contribution to the local community.

Matt Cefai, Metropolitan Police, Police Sergeant, Kingston Town Centre Team said: “A huge thank you to the students and staff at Kingston College for their hard work and creativity. It has been a fantastic example of policing and education working together to benefit the local community. We’re already looking forward to developing the next project together.”

A huge thank you to MET Police Kingston for partnering with us on this inspiring project and for giving our students the opportunity to make a real difference.
