Safeguarding

Mary gained the highest grades possible, D*D*D*, equivalent to 3 A* grades at A Level, and is progressing to University of Surrey to study BSc (Hons) Psychology.

“I chose to study BTEC Health and Social Care at Kingston College because I’ve always been interested in understanding people and supporting others, especially around mental health and physical wellbeing. Kingston College stood out to me because of its supportive environment, the practical side of the course, and the opportunities it offers outside the classroom. I wanted somewhere that would help me build confidence and gain real experience, and I felt Kingston was the right fit for that.

What attracted me more to a BTEC rather than A Levels was the balance between coursework and practical learning. I learn best by applying knowledge to real-life situations, so I liked that the course focuses on teamwork, communication, research and work experience, rather than only exams. It felt more connected to the kind of career I want in the future.

After I finish my course, I plan to go to University of Surrey to study BSc (Hons) Psychology. My long-term goal is to become a Clinical Psychologist and eventually study at PhD level. I’m really interested in understanding behaviour, mental health and how professionals can support people through challenges.

Experience at College

My tutors have been really supportive throughout the course! They’ve always encouraged me to do my best, provided pastoral support, helped me improve my work submissions, engage me in opportunities for work experience, supported me in job processes such as interviews and CVs and given useful advice about my future career plans. Their support has made me feel more confident in myself and my abilities and allowed me to flourish as a result.

I’ve had the opportunity to take part in several experiences outside the classroom, which have been really valuable. I visited an anaesthesia museum, which gave me a deeper understanding of healthcare history and medical developments. I also went on a trip to Thorpe Park, which was a fun experience and helped strengthen teamwork and friendships within the course. I also completed work experience in a residential care home, a hospital and a nursery. These placements helped me develop communication and interpersonal skills while giving me insight into different care settings. They taught me the importance of patience, empathy and professionalism, and they confirmed that I want to work in a career where I can support people’s mental health and physical wellbeing in Health and Social Care.

Advice to New Students

I would say that BTEC Health and Social Care is a really rewarding course if you’re interested in helping people and learning about real-life health and care situations. The course gives you both practical knowledge and teamwork skills, and it helps build confidence for future careers in healthcare, nursing, social work or childcare. I’d recommend it because it’s not just classroom learning, you also develop communication, leadership and professional skills that are useful in everyday life and future careers. My main advice would be to use resubmissions to your advantage, do a little criteria of coursework in each lesson - you have to stop it becoming overwhelming - and build good relationships with your teachers/tutors, they help a lot when it comes to improving your grades!

I would recommend Kingston College because it offers a supportive and welcoming environment where students can grow academically and personally. The teachers are encouraging and always willing to help, and there are lots of enrichment opportunities outside the classroom as well. Students can get involved in a variety of sports and clubs including music, reading, gaming and art, which makes college life more enjoyable and helps people meet new friends and build confidence. Another great thing about the college is its location. It’s only around a 5-10-minute walk from Kingston town centre, including Eden Street and the Bentall Centre shopping centre, so there are plenty of places nearby to eat, shop, study or relax during breaks and after lessons with your friends. Overall, it’s a great place to study, gain new experiences and prepare for university or future employment!
