Safeguarding

After spending 11 years out of education and employment raising her family, Fiona made the brave and transformative decision to return to learning. Enrolling on the Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning course, she took the first step toward rebuilding her career and pursuing a long-held ambition to work with children.

From the outset, Fiona demonstrated commitment, resilience, and a genuine passion for learning. Alongside her main qualification, she strengthened her knowledge and skills by completing several additional Level 2 NCFE courses, including Safeguarding and Prevent, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Common Childhood Illnesses, and Understanding Autism.

These additional qualifications not only enhanced her theoretical knowledge but also equipped her with a well-rounded understanding of the challenges and needs children may face.

As part of her course, Fiona secured a placement at Aragon Primary School in Morden, where she quickly made a strong and positive impression. Staff recognised her dedication, professionalism, and natural ability to connect with pupils. She consistently demonstrated strong communication skills, empathy, patience and a proactive attitude to supporting learning.

Fiona approached her studies with determination and discipline, successfully completing all elements of her college portfolio to a high standard. Her work reflected both her developing professional knowledge and her ability to apply it effectively in a real classroom setting.

Thanks to her outstanding performance during placement, Fiona was encouraged to apply for a full-time Teaching Assistant role at Aragon Primary School. She went on to secure the position, receiving excellent feedback from the interview panel, who highlighted her positivity, capability, and genuine passion for supporting children’s learning.

Fiona’s journey does not stop here. She is already planning her next steps by enrolling on a Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning course in September and signing up for an Open University BA in Primary Education next year. Her ultimate goal is to become a qualified teacher.

Fiona’s story is a fantastic example of how returning to education can transform lives. Her journey from being out of work for over a decade to securing a full-time role in education highlights the impact of determination, support, and opportunity.

She is an inspiration to others considering a return to learning and a shining example of how personal experience, when combined with professional training, can lead to meaningful and rewarding career success.
