Level 3 Year 1 students recently had an exciting opportunity to take part in a workshop delivered by visiting artist Sam, as part of a collaboration supported by Wandsworth Council.

The session provided students with valuable insight into life as a professional creative, combining practical activities with real-world advice on building a career in the arts.

Sam shared her own journey as a freelance artist, offering students an honest and inspiring look at both the creative process and the realities of working in the industry. The workshop formed part of her funded work with the council and highlights the importance of connecting students with industry professionals.

Art Tutor Eddie, who organised the session, said:

"It is always vitally important for our students to have relevant artists come in and talk about not only their practice but the practicalities of becoming a freelance creative. This really allows them to gain an important understanding of industry outside of college.

The students gained a great deal from the workshop and were eager to talk afterwards. They were clearly inspired, particularly by the possibilities of becoming a freelance creative in London."

Students responded enthusiastically, engaging with both the practical elements of the workshop and the discussion around career pathways. For many, the session helped to bring their future ambitions into sharper focus and highlighted the opportunities available within the creative industries.

Following the success of the visit, Sam has expressed an interest in supporting the college again in the future, creating further opportunities for students to engage with industry professionals and develop their career aspirations.
