Students at South Thames College have been showcasing their practical talents and community spirit by supporting local charity Dons Local Action through a creative fundraising project.
Multi-skills students joined forces with peers from Health and Social Care to raise funds for the charity, which works to tackle poverty across Merton, Wandsworth and Kingston.
As part of the initiative, multi-skills students designed and built a range of planter boxes using recycled wooden pallets. After carefully constructing and decorating each piece, the students filled the planters with flowers and prepared them for sale as part of their fundraising efforts.
Demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability, the students also repurposed a leftover kitchen worktop that was destined for disposal. Using their skills, they transformed it into a mobile butcher’s block, which will be donated via Dons Local Action to a local family in need.
Through their combined efforts, the students successfully raised an impressive £149 for the charity, highlighting the impact of teamwork, creativity and social responsibility.
Dons Local Action supports vulnerable residents by providing essential items such as food parcels, furniture, digital devices, school uniforms and musical instruments. Working closely with schools, charities and volunteers, the organisation helps promote dignity, opportunity and long-term community resilience.
Marle Bakbak, Head of School – Vocational and Technical Studies, praised the students’ efforts, saying:
“Thanks to their hard work, teamwork and community spirit, learners successfully raised an impressive £149 for the charity. Well done to everyone involved for combining creativity, sustainability and fundraising to make a positive difference in the local community.”
This project not only enabled students to develop valuable practical and employability skills, but also demonstrated how education can have a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
