Creativity took centre stage at this year’s Annual Hairdressing and Beauty Competition, held in the College’s ACT Theatre on 22 April, where students showcased their talent through the striking theme ‘Elements: Fire, Water, Earth and Wind’.
Students from Level 2 Adult Hairdressing, Level 3 Hairdressing and Level 2 Beauty at Kingston College were tasked with creating a complete “total look”, combining hair, makeup and styling inspired by the elemental theme. After arriving early to set up their workstations, competitors spent the morning bringing their mood boards to life, before their final looks were judged by a panel of the Deputy Head of School and senior lecturers - Julie Watkins, Jenny Wiltshire and Rianna Henry.
The standard of work was exceptionally high, with students demonstrating impressive technical skill, creativity and attention to detail. Hair students designed and executed intricate styles, while Beauty students created looks with professional makeup artistry. The event culminated in a live presentation in the ACT Theatre, celebrating the hard work and achievements of all participants.
Competition Winners:
Level 3 Hairdressing: 1st – Ruby, 2nd – Courtney, 3rd – Ella
Level 2 Hairdressing: 1st – Anila, 2nd – Eun Ju, 3rd – Soniya
Beauty: 1st – Shirl, 2nd – Gabriella, 3rd – Molly
The event was supported by dedicated teaching staff Pam Rowe, Leigh Murphy, Angela Pharoah and Carole Lawrence, whose guidance helped students realise their creative visions.
Hairdressing Lecturer Pam Rowe said: “Thank you and congratulations to all of you for your hard work and effort in our total look competition ‘Elements’. You are all winners - I hope you all enjoyed the event.”
The impact of the competition was reflected in heartfelt student feedback following the event, with one learner praising the teaching team for their inspiration, support and dedication, and highlighting how the experience enabled students to produce such outstanding work.
The competition continues to be a highlight of the academic year, offering students the opportunity to develop industry‑ready skills, build confidence and celebrate their creativity in a professional setting.
