Safeguarding

Carshalton College recently welcomed developers, employers, training providers and local stakeholders to a series of Developer & Provider Workshops focused on addressing construction skills shortages and creating new pathways into employment for local residents.

The workshops brought together key partners from across the construction sector to share best practice, discuss future workforce needs and explore how collaboration can help build a stronger talent pipeline for Sutton and the surrounding area.

Representatives from Lovell Partnerships, St George PLC, Bugler Developments, McLaughlin & Harvey and Socius provided valuable insights into upcoming developments across the region, outlining future skills requirements, social value commitments and the opportunities being created for local residents through employment, training and apprenticeships.

A special thanks goes to Zaid Al-Sayyah, Economic Growth Programme Manager at the London Borough of Sutton, whose partnership and ongoing commitment continue to drive this important initiative forward.

Throughout the sessions, delegates engaged in productive discussions that challenged traditional approaches, encouraged collaboration and identified practical solutions to bridging skills gaps within the construction industry. The workshops also highlighted the importance of creating meaningful routes into employment and apprenticeships for local people, ensuring that future developments deliver lasting benefits to the community.

By working together, developers, employers, education providers and local authorities can help ensure Sutton's growth creates a legacy that extends beyond new buildings, supporting the development of skills, careers and long-term opportunities for residents.

As demand for skilled construction professionals continues to rise, partnerships such as these will play a vital role in shaping a workforce that is equipped to meet the needs of future developments while supporting economic growth across the borough.
