Creative Media Level 3 students recently enjoyed two exciting trips as part of the prestigious BFI London Film Festival, providing valuable insight into the film and media industry.

Students attended a special Screen Talk with acclaimed filmmaker Sofia Coppola, where they gained first-hand knowledge of the creative process behind some of her most celebrated work. The session gave students a fascinating opportunity to hear about storytelling, directing and the realities of working within the film industry.

The group also attended a screening of Being Huemann, a powerful documentary exploring the life and career of disability rights campaigner Judy Heumann. The film encouraged students to consider how documentary filmmaking can be used to raise awareness, challenge perceptions and inspire social change.

These experiences allowed students to engage with industry professionals, explore different filmmaking styles and deepen their understanding of media production beyond the classroom.

Exposure to major cultural events such as the BFI London Film Festival helps students develop their critical thinking, creative skills and awareness of current trends within the screen industries.

The trips formed part of Carshalton College’s commitment to enriching learning through real-world experiences, helping students build the knowledge, confidence and inspiration needed for future careers in the creative sector.
