For the duration of the Christmas and New Year break our Creative Industries Centre gallery window was filled with the exceptional work of our HND Fashion & Textiles students who collaborated with community non-profit Save the World Club which advocates for sustainability and community empowerment. The students most recent brief explored AI and sustainability in fashion with their final intricately researched garments made entirely from donated clothing and materials from STWC’s Surbiton warehouse.
The project explored the intersection of conceptual art and ecological sustainability within the fashion industry with students investigating how AI-driven processes impact the environmental footprint of fashion, from design and production to consumption and waste.
HND Fashion & Textiles student, Juno, stated: “My project explored the potential for AI to improve sustainability in fashion, focusing on its ability to minimise waste and resource use. While tools such as pattern-cutting programmes and upcycling trends promote sustainability, the challenge lies in ensuring AI is used responsibly, avoiding its misuse to fuel overproduction.
“Water served as my conceptual theme, symbolising the intersection of AI and sustainability. The textiles industry consumes and pollutes vast amounts of water, but water also inspires creativity. Drawing from Japan’s natural water features, I incorporated techniques such as Shibori dyeing and Boro stitching to reflect rivers, streams, and waterfalls.”
Congratulations to our Level 5 HND in Art & Design - Fashion & Textiles exhibiting students Melissa, Juno and Rhenice.
A huge thank you to our talented BTEC Photography students Rojina and Becca, and our fantastic models!
