BTEC Level 3 Photography

This course in photography covers a wide range of specialist areas and disciplines, from traditional photographic processes to digital photography. The course allows learners to gain an understanding of both traditional and contemporary practice and will give students the opportunity to appreciate the work of other artists and photographers. Working with your teachers, you will get the opportunity to exhibit your work at the Penny School Gallery, self-publish a book and create your own website. There are also visits to London galleries and museums.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a 'Meet the Tutor' event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference/school report.

    A portfolio or example of your work to demonstrate that you have the appropriate level of skill required to succeed on the course. We love to see your creativity!

    4 x GCSE's at 4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate/Extended Certificate or above (at merit or above) in a relevant subject.

    You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE 4 or above, or L2 Functional skills in English and/or maths.

  • Course Content


    The first term of our programme will allow you to gain a solid foundation of technical skills in analogue and digital photography. This will cover camera controls, workflow and editing techniques in Lightroom as well as traditional darkroom practice. The second term you will be introduced to specialist studio lighting equipment and post-production image manipulation with Photoshop.

    This course offers a broad knowledge and understanding of photography and related areas including communication through art, design and digital skills using Photoshop.

    Our lessons are a mixture of lectures, practical workshops, group work and independent tasks. Learners work is generated through practical projects, client briefs, workshops and engagement with industry, preparing them through the development of portfolios and materials for progression. Work is assessed throughout the course and there are no exams.

  • Progression Next Steps


    The Extended Diploma in Photography is an ideal route for students looking for places at universities and colleges and careers in photography. It provides a wide base of skills in all areas providing entry into other design areas.

    Alternatively, you could expect to be employed at a junior level in a related job. You will have access to a range of career and further/higher education opportunities. Students progress onto specialist courses at Degree, Higher National Diploma, or Foundation Degree Level: you will be advised and supported in your UCAS applications with help on appropriate routes and portfolio preparation.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

  • Additional Information


    Most art and design materials and equipment are provided, however, students are expected to purchase a Starter Kit at the beginning of the year. More information will be provided prior to enrolment. Ideally you would own a DSLR camera, although some can be borrowed from college.

    There will also be trips and visits throughout the course which will incur some costs.
