This Beginner to Improver Clothes Making Skills course is designed to support learners, who have some experience sewing or no experience at all, in creating a solid foundation of garment construction and sewing. This course will focus on introducing best practices for cutting and sewing garments and improving existing sewing techniques.

Course Content

This course will cover foundation garment construction and sewing techniques. Create a garment of your choice, such as a top, skirt or dress.

*Sew darts, gathers, and pleats to shape and add style to your garments

*Attach facings for clean and professional edges

*Read and interpret patterns and understand basic garment construction principles

*Insert zippers accurately for functional and neat closures

*Hem skirts and dresses to achieve a polished finish

The course runs for 9 sessions, once a week. The course is held on the 2nd floor: sewing room 223.

What is needed for the course:
- Tape measure
- Sharp 2H pencil (preferably mechanical pencils with a 0.5mm or 0.7mm lead)
- Rubber
- Sharpener
- Glue
- Sellotape
- Paper scissor
- Pattern notchers (optional)
- Tracing wheel (optional)
- French curve or a set square (optional)
- A4 ring binder
- X 10 A4 plastic wallets
- A5 notebook
- Black or blue biro There will be individual and group tuition, with teacher led discussions and demonstrations. This course does not cover drafting patterns and learners will use commercial sewing patterns
Course Structure

9 sessions, once a week. There will be individual and group tuition, with teacher led discussions and demonstrations. Each learner is responsible for choosing their own project and purchasing the patterns, materials and trims to work with.

Teacher feedback, individual learning plans, student and peer self-assessment.
Teaching and Learning

Learning takes place through a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and individual project work. You will have the opportunity to plan and create your own projects under the guidance of an experienced tutor. There will be time in each session for discussion, feedback, and developing your practical techniques.
