Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to enhance your sewing skills, this course will give you the practical knowledge to bring your interior design ideas to life. Learn to make curtains, blinds and cushion covers. This course will teach you how to make a variety of beautiful soft furnishings items for your home to a professional standard. Anyone with prior knowledge will be able to create more advanced soft furnishings such as interlined curtains and blinds, bed coverings, decorative cushions, lampshades and more.

  • Entry Requirements


    This course is suitable for all levels, though some basic experience using a sewing machine is helpful. If you are completely new to sewing, you may wish to explore our Clothes Making courses first.

  • Course Content


    Discover the art of creating beautiful, bespoke home furnishings. This hands-on course will guide you through every step; from learning how to confidently use a sewing machine to mastering the essential techniques of measuring, pattern matching, cutting, and fabric assembly.

    By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

    *Accurately measure windows for both blinds and curtains

    *Select suitable fabrics and calculate fabric quantities with confidence

    *Understand the full process of making custom blinds and curtains

    *Create a professional piped cushion cover with a zip fastening

    After completing this course, you can progress to other creative textile or sewing courses, such as Advanced Soft Furnishings, Upholstery, or Clothes Making.     All essential equipment will be provided, but you may wish to bring your own fabrics, trims, or patterns for specific projects. Details about materials will be discussed during the first session. Please wear suitable clothing for practical work and bring a notebook or sketchbook for recording measurements and design ideas

    This is a non-accredited course, designed to help you build practical skills in a relaxed and supportive environment. It runs over nine sessions per term, offering a balance of guided instruction and practical making time. Each session builds on the last, allowing you to develop your skills and confidence as you go.

  • Teaching and Learning


    Learning takes place through a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and individual project work.
