Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) students at Kingston College recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the Engineering Workshops at Heathrow Airport. The visit offered students a rare, behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s busiest airports and its complex engineering operations.
Led by workshop manager, Dean Shearing, the tour gave students an in-depth view of the airport's maintenance and engineering facilities, where cutting-edge technology and precision engineering ensure the safety and efficiency of global air travel. From aircraft maintenance bays to component repair stations, the visit highlighted the scale and complexity of engineering careers within the aviation industry.
Students were able to see first-hand how theoretical knowledge from the classroom is applied in a real-world, high-pressure environment. They also had the chance to engage with experienced professionals, ask questions about career paths and witness the teamwork and problem-solving required in a live operational setting.
Engineering tutor, Carl Daley, said: “The visit to Heathrow’s Engineering Workshops was a valuable experience for our students. It broadened their understanding of what a career in engineering can look like and helped to reinforce the skills and knowledge they are building on the course.”
