During the first term, South Thames College has been working in partnership with Galliard Homes, who kindly invited our Level 2 Plumbing, Level 2, and Level 3 Electrical Installation learners to take part in a site visit to a multi-million-pound development.
Learners were provided with full PPE and completed a health and safety induction before exploring the site. Starting from the 25th floor and working their way down, they observed the different stages of construction, from first fix to second fix and near completion. They gained valuable insight into industry tools, equipment, fire safety procedures, materials used, and the expectations placed on site and project managers.
The visit also helped learners understand different career pathways within construction, including job roles, pay structures, daily rates, and payment-per-task models. Learners also explored the basement areas, where they learned about pump systems, control systems, and backup generators.
We would like to thank Scott Stuart, Talent Acquisition Partner at Galliard Homes, for supporting our learners and organising these informative visits.
The experience was inspiring for learners and opened up new pathways into the construction industry. Galliard Homes also offers apprenticeship schemes and has offered to provide work placements for some of our learners in the new year.
