On Thursday 5 February, Kingston College Hairdressing welcomed a group of visiting students from Japan as part of our ongoing international exchange programme. The day provided a valuable opportunity for cultural exchange, curriculum enrichment and exposure to specialist industry practice that would not typically be accessible to the visiting learners in their home country.

The visit began with a warm welcome before students spent the morning with Level 2 Textured Hair Lecturer, Rianna Henry, participating in an in-depth textured hair workshop. The session focused on developing an understanding of different hair types and classifications, hair follicle biology, correct handling techniques and the essential tools required for working with textured hair. Students were also introduced to the LOC method using the Design Essentials professional product range.

This workshop was of particular significance, as the visiting Japanese students have little to no exposure of textured hair within their domestic training programmes. The session therefore offered unique technical learning, broadened cultural awareness and encouraged professional dialogue around inclusive hairdressing practice.

In the afternoon, students moved into our commercial salon environment, where they took part in delivering the Kryotherapy hair treatment, a cutting-edge Brazilian service. This treatment represents the latest innovation in hair care within the UK, with only two Kryotherapy machines currently available nationwide, positioning our provision at the forefront of industry practice.

Rianna Henry delivered a professional demonstration of the service before supporting the students to practise the technique on each other under supervision. This hands-on experience allowed learners to engage with advanced equipment, develop confidence in a commercial setting and gain insight into emerging global trends within the hair industry.

The exchange day was highly successful, showcasing the strength of our curriculum, staff expertise and industry-standard facilities, while reinforcing the value of international partnerships in enhancing learner experience, employability and global awareness.
