Carshalton College recently hosted its annual Employability Fortnight, a dynamic programme designed to give students real-world insights into their chosen industries and prepare them for future careers. Over two weeks, learners across multiple disciplines engaged in hands-on activities, employer talks, and live briefs—all aimed at boosting confidence, skills, and employability.

Highlights from the fortnight included:

  • Level 3 Beauty Therapy students showcased their talents at the Merton Council Staff Wellbeing Event, running a pop-up nail bar and offering massages to council staff.
  • Level 2 Carpentry learners explored sustainability and innovation with Michael de Podesta, who shared expertise on Green Energy.
  • Level 3 Motor Vehicle students connected with Autotech Academy and Currie Motors, gaining insights into automotive careers and apprenticeship pathways.
  • Level 2 & Level 4 Beauty Therapy students benefited from an Employability Talk and Live Brief led by industry expert Kate Smith.
  • Level 2 Motorcycle learners met professionals from Doble Motorcycles, learning about opportunities in the motorcycle sector.
  • Level 1 Plumbing students engaged with Plumbingwerx, while Level 2 Plumbing learners heard from Samuel Asiamah of Altar Construction about career progression in the trade.
  • Level 2 & Level 3 Sports students were inspired by Sam Earle from AFC Wimbledon, who shared insights into careers in sport and fitness.
  • Level 2 & Level 3 Media and Gaming students explored creative pathways with David Ly from Escape Studios, a leader in animation and VFX training.
  • Level 1 Carpentry & Level 2 Bricklaying students learned from Buxton Building Contractors Ltd about opportunities in construction and the importance of craftsmanship.

Throughout the fortnight, employers emphasised key themes such as hard work, resilience, and kindness, values that underpin success in any profession. Students were encouraged to practice their skills, stay adaptable, and approach challenges with a positive mindset.
