Merton College recently hosted Employability Fortnight, which provides students with a programme designed to offer them a taste into their chosen industries and prepare them for future careers. Over two weeks learners took part in activities, employer talks and live briefs.
Highlights of Emplyability Fortnight included:
- Our Digital IT & Computing T Level students participated in an online work experience session with Kainos, which explored the digital insight of coding.
- Level 3 Electrical students engaged in a talk from London South AICO, the European market leader in home life safety. It covered the different types of alarms AICO offer and how they are installed.
- Level 2 and 3 Business, Level 3 IT & Computing and Digital T Level learners were inspired by Tyson Nsimbe from the Equals Group. He focused on the things that employers are looking for, preparing a good CV and writing a good covering letter. He also offered the students mentorship, work placements and a site visit to his London offices.
- Level 1, 2 and 3 Health & Social Care students took part in a Medical Mavericks workshop, to learn about the different types of careers open to them within the Healthcare sector. Activities included: recording and printing a heart ECG; using a real needle to take fake blood from a dummy arm, listening to their own pulse with a doppler; taking an eye retina scan on their phones.
- Level 3 Business and IT & Computing learners worked with Voice for Locals, a programme that aims to get local businesses working together for the sucess of the high street. Learners took part in three 4-hour training sessions with VFL and will be hired part time after their training has been completed.
- Level 2 and 3 Engineering learners benefitted from a presentation from Alstom, led by Technical Support Manager Rob Greenbrook. It focused on what Alston do, the type of trains they run and general information on their Group. There was also advice on careers and how to apply for Apprenticeship opportunities. Alstom then endorsed a Live Brief for our L3 students, who will work on it as part of their work experience.
- Level 3 Business and IT & Computing students helped devise a health questionnaire with Healthwatch Merton, focusing on the health services on offer in the borough of Merton. They'll survey tutor groups within the College to get responses and will then analyse the data.
- Level 2 Health & Social Care learners packed Christmas gift bags as part of Age UK Merton's Christmas Gift Campaign. They then delivered the parcels into the Merton community.
We'd like to say a huge thank you to all employers and partners who contributed to making Employability Fortnight 2025 a fantastic success for all our learners.
