South Thames College Upholstery students were delighted to welcome professional upholsterer Rosie Shaw to their pop-up workshop in the Southside Shopping Centre.

With an established South London upholstery business, which includes services ranging from re-upholstering and restoring furniture to creating bespoke items, Rosie was very impressed with the quality of the work being undertaken by the group. She spent some time with each student, discussing their individual projects and offering encouragement with their future plans. A Q & A session followed, with Rosie sharing her journey from crafts student to building a successful upholstery business, including advice on self-employment and insider tips on trade resources.

The Careers team received positive feedback about the event from Kate Turney, Head of Section – Adult & Community Learning; “The students were delighted. They said it was a really useful session and that she was a great speaker”.

From the students; “Rosie was really knowledgeable and able to give the class useful information and pointers about how to set up a business in Upholstery. She shared her own story and that was exactly what we needed at this stage of our training. Thanks to Rosie for coming along to the class!”
