Level 2 Certificate in Motorcycle Maintenance IMI

This is a Level 2 vocational qualification which provides individuals with specialist technical knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to work in the motorcycle maintenance sector as a motorcycle technician; alongside the development of wider transferable skills for use across the whole retail motor industry.

This qualification was developed with input from employers, professional bodies and training providers; and therefore includes the core knowledge and skills required by the sector.

This Level 2 Technical Certificate qualification provides a progression path to the Level 3 Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance (601/7328/2) qualification, which will enable the learner to further develop and expand their knowledge, understanding and skills required to reach a diagnostic technician level. Therefore this qualification is ideally suited to learners with no prior experience or knowledge of motorcycle mechanical and electrical systems systems, tools and equipment, motorcycle maintenance and health and safety. Learners with some prior knowledge and experience within these areas may be better suited to the Level 3 Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance (601/7328/2) qualification, which will further develop their knowledge and experience to enable them to progress to diagnostic technician level.

Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage. Enrichment Activities - The students will have an opportunity to visit trade shows / exhibitions to liaise with employers and see the latest with employers and see the latest technology in the Motorcycle Industry.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    Learners taking this qualification must be 16 years or over. There are no other formal entry requirements for this qualification and learners are not expected to have any prior knowledge or experience. However GCSEs in Maths and English at grades D- F are recommended. Selection for entry should take into account each applicant's existing academic/vocational qualifications, experience and interest in working in the sector.

  • Course Content


    Learners will develop essential transferable skills required within a number of job roles within the motor industry: • Health, safety and good housekeeping • Maintaining good working relationships and using effective communication skills • Using materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices Learners will develop their specialist knowledge and skills in core motorcycle maintenance and repair topic areas (see examples below):

    • Removing and replacing engine power train and lubrication systems • Removing and replacing cooling, fuel, ignition, air and exhaust systems • Removing and replacing steering, brakes and suspension units • Removing and replacing starting and charging systems • Conducting routine motorcycle maintenance

  • Additional Information


    This is a hands-on course in a workshop so you'll need overalls and boots to do the course safely. If you don't have your own, you can buy overalls and boots from the College. Your tutors will give you more information on this.
