BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Creative Media Skills

Enjoy making films, graphics design work, or animations? This one-year course gives you the space, skills, and support to do it well. You'll complete practical projects that build confidence with cameras, editing, design, and animation; creating a portfolio you can show to colleges, employers, and clients.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    4 x GCSE's at D/3 or above, or a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject.

    Your GCSE profile must include either maths and / or English , or a Functional Skills qualification in maths and / or English.

  • Course Content


    Learning is hands-on and clearly laid out. You'll research ideas and audiences, communicate your vision, develop practical skills, improve work through feedback, and build professional habits like timekeeping, teamwork, and safe practice.

    During your time on the course, you'll complete five projects:

    • Continuity (film): Shoot and edit a short scene in Premiere Pro.
    • Advertising Through the Years (Graphic Design): Create decade-specific adverts using your own photography and Photoshop.
    • Movie Trailer Project (Film): Pitch a film concept and produce the trailer.
    • James Bond Opening Title Sequence (Animation): Modernise a James Bond films title sequence in After Effects.
    • Final Major Project: We give you a theme and you will utilise any one of the film, graphic design, or animation processes to produce a passion projects portfolio of work that you will show off to demonstrate what you've learned and how you've developed these skills further.

    Every brief follows the same process of: Research, Pitch, Plan, Draft, Create, Feedback, Final Product.

    You'll use HD cameras, tripods, lighting and the Adobe Suite (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects), learning safe setup and good on-set practice. Work happens in dedicated Mac suites with space for focused editing and written work.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Most learners move on to Level 3 Creative Media Practice. Others progress to Level 3 Graphic Design, Photography, or Digital Art, Animation & Games.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

    During your time with us you will have access to a dedicated team of careers and education advisors who will help you as you take the next steps towards achieving your goals.

  • Additional Information


    Most media materials and equipment are provided, however, students are expected to purchase a Starter Kit at the beginning of the year. More information will be provided prior to enrolment. There will also be trips and visits throughout the course which will incur some costs.

  • Assessment Details


    There are no exams. Your portfolio is assessed across five areas: Investigation, Communication, Practical Skills, Development, and Approach. You will show what you learned, how you applied it, and how you worked day-to-day for each project.
