Roman Gerlach, a Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology student at South Thames College, recently took part in a powerful community film project through the Enable Film Academy — an innovative work experience programme offering hands-on training alongside industry professionals.
Collaborating with Enable, a local Wandsworth charity, and professional filmmakers from Chocolate Films, Roman was actively involved in scripting, filming, and editing a short documentary showcasing the vital work of the Heart and Lungs Music Group in Tooting.
This unique group supports individuals living with cardiac and pulmonary conditions by harnessing the therapeutic power of music to aid rehabilitation, boost confidence, and create a strong sense of community.
From the early planning stages through to on-location filming and final edits at Chocolate Films’ Nine Elms studio, Roman played a key role in shaping the project’s narrative and visual impact.
Peter Freeman from Enable commended Roman’s contribution:
“Roman was fantastic from the very start, collaborating with professional filmmakers, learning new skills, and excelling in community-based storytelling. His attitude was outstanding, and we all benefitted from Roman’s creativity and insight. We hope to stay in touch with Roman and continue working with other talented students from South Thames College.”
The finished film received glowing feedback from the Heart and Lungs Music Group and stands as a moving example of how young creatives can make a meaningful difference through storytelling.
