Level 3 Policing students visited Croydon Crown Court to observe the process of law court proceedings.
This provides a valuable insight to how the UK law system is run and supports one of the units being studied; morals, values and standards.
The group had the opportunity to witness a trial that reached a not-guilty verdict as well as one that reached a guilty verdict.
One of the trials witnessed was for a drug offence. The 34-year-old male defendant was accused of having drugs in his possession, and also the intent to supply to others. The judge concluded that he was guilty of both charges.
The defendant pleaded not guilty with intent to supply the drugs to others, but pleaded guilty to own personal use. He will face another Court hearing in January 2024 where a decision will be made on his prison sentence.
Witnessing these two different types of cases showed our learners how offenders will and can be prosecuted and how the Law and Policing is involved in providing proof and evidence for a case.
