In September, two prominent colleges from Japan had the unique opportunity to visit the Hairdressing Department at Kingston College, immersing themselves in an enriching experience designed to enhance their skills in the beauty and hairdressing industry.
During their visit, the Japanese students participated in an array of engaging events that showcased innovative techniques and hands-on learning. They attended classes led by stylists Leigh Murphy and Jenny Wiltshire, who provided invaluable insights into applying temporary hair colour using hair chalks. The students eagerly learned how to create on-trend looks, including cutting creative fringes that would appeal to their future clientele.
In addition to these practical sessions, the group attended a masterclass presented by Rebecca Dove from L'Oréal Professional. Here, they explored a comprehensive range of hair products, gaining practical knowledge about the latest trends and technologies in hair care. The students were particularly excited about the opportunity to utilise L'Oreal's App, which offered interactive activities and additional resources to deepen their understanding.
A highlight of the visit was spending time in our commercial salon alongside our own students, Headmasters Academy at Kingston College. The students assisted with busy client sessions, working alongside our own students and experiencing the dynamics of a bustling salon environment. This real-world exposure was pivotal, allowing them to apply their skills in a practical setting and understand the demands of the industry.
Additionally, the students were inspired by a demonstration from Berat, a talented Level 3 Barbering student currently making waves in one of London's popular urban barber shops. His expertise and passion for barbering left a lasting impression, motivating the Japanese students to elevate their own skills and ambitions.
Overall, the visit to Kingston College was a remarkable experience for these Japanese students, blending educational opportunities with practical exposure in one of London's vibrant hairdressing scenes. They returned home not only with new techniques but also with a renewed enthusiasm for their craft.
Two Kingston College Hairdressing team members are being flown to Japan in June 2025 to support the academies in Japan with their curriculum development.
