Safeguarding

Kingston College had the pleasure of hosting Sir Edward Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, for a tour of our newly established Health & Social Care Hub on Thursday 23 January.

During his visit, Sir Edward engaged with two Access to Paramedic Science students: Jodie, a former young carer, and Huda, who began her career in a care home at the age of 16. Accompanying them were College Principal John O’Shea, Vice Principal Charlotte Veale, Head of School Amanda Morrison and tutor and registered nurse Abdullah.

The tour included demonstrations of our state-of-the-art mock hospital ward, home care setting, and Metaverse technology, which Jodie and Huda highlighted as proving essential for providing students with hands-on, practical learning experiences.

The discussion addressed the escalating crisis in the health and social care sector, focusing on staff and bed shortages, the need for enhanced recognition, training, and support for family caregivers, and the necessary measures to address these challenges. Sir Edward also spoke with Jodie and Huda about how the London Ambulance Service is adapting its first response strategy to alleviate the unprecedented pressures faced by A&E departments across the UK.

Sir Edward Davey commented: “It was amazing to speak with Jodie and Huda, who travel far and wide to get practical, hands-on experience in the mock hospital ward and the care home setting in the Hub. These facilities are a great addition to an already great school.”

We would like to thank Sir Edward for his insightful and constructive visit.
