This Spring, 78 Level 3 Year 2 Creative Industries students at Kingston College embarked on an inspiring 5-day residential trip to Amsterdam, immersing themselves in the city's vibrant art and culture. From iconic galleries to bustling streets, the students experienced the rich creativity that defines the Dutch capital.

Students from Architecture, Art, Graphic Design, Photography, and 3D Design enjoyed a jam-packed itinerary filled with subject-specific visits as well as whole-group excursions. Each designed to deepen their understanding of contemporary art and design, at this crucial time in their course, planning for their Final Major Project which features in the College's huge end of year exhibition, the Summer Show.

Amsterdam’s Museumplein was a highlight for many. Students explored the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum, which not only houses the masterpieces of the iconic Dutch painter but also hosted a fascinating exhibition of Anselm Kiefer’s works.

Photography and Graphic Design students also had the opportunity to explore innovative exhibitions at the Foam Photography Gallery and The Moving Image Museum, where they gained valuable insight into the artistic visions behind temporary photography and moving image displays. Time was set aside for independent exploration, with students discovering hidden gems such as the Anne Frank House and other smaller galleries around the city.

A standout experience from the trip was the visit to the Straat Gallery at the NDSM Wharf, a firm favourite from last year’s itinerary. Set in a former shipbuilding warehouse, the gallery features over 180 pieces by more than 170 street and graffiti artists. Students were captivated by the creativity of this unique space, located across the river from central Amsterdam.

One of the trip’s most memorable moments came during a golden hour boat ride along Amsterdam’s iconic canals. Students enjoyed breathtaking views, learning about the city’s rich history while capturing photos of the picturesque scenery, and themselves!

The group also ventured to Rotterdam for a day of exploration. Highlights included the contemporary Kunstinstituut Melly gallery and the Boijmans Depot. Architecture and 3D Design students marvelled at Huis Sonneveld (a beautifully preserved example of 1930’s architecture), and the phenomenal cube-houses. Students also had the chance to enjoy lunch at the famous Markthal, a food market set beneath a striking architectural horseshoe, featuring a massive mural by local artists.

Rebecca Starkiss, Section Head of Art & Design, commented:

“Following the success of last year’s residential, we were thrilled to take 78 learners to Amsterdam for five days of art, culture, and exploration. The group enjoyed clear blue skies throughout, which made it possible to discover the city’s canals by private boat and visit a wide range of galleries and museums.

A highlight of the trip was a day trip to Rotterdam, where students visited the impressive indoor market to experience local cuisine, many stroopwafles were eaten! This was followed by a tour of the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen-Europe’s first publicly accessible art storage facility and an inspiring piece of architecture!

As a team we really enjoy the time spent with our students and the opportunity to introduce them to such a broad range of art, culture and experiences that they wouldn't have had otherwise. We look forward to seeing how these experiences are reflected in the work exhibited at our upcoming summer show. Now it's time to start planning the residential for 2026!”

The students had an unforgettable time saying:

“I was really looking forward to the Amsterdam trip since I started at Kingston and it didn’t disappoint. I saw a lot of art. A highlight was the Van Gogh Museum and I absolutely loved the graffiti museum. I’ve never seen anything like it. The time with my friends was unforgettable and I am over the moon that I went.” – Evie: Art & Design

“A good balance between college outings and free time.”- Jayden: Art & Design

“I had so much fun, more than I expected, and my standards were pretty high anyway! The graffiti museum and the Van Gogh Museum really helped out with my project. But the best part was exploring central Amsterdam. I’d 100% do it all again. The staff were amazing at looking after us and making sure we all enjoyed ourselves. The hostel room was super nice too! 5 STAR TRIP - 10/10!” – Kitty: Art & Design

"Amsterdam was a good chance to visit lots of museums and expand our knowledge. I enjoyed the Straat Museum as it gave me an opportunity to explore my ideas for my final major project." – Lily: 3D Design

"The trip to Amsterdam was a fun experience as it was my first time outside the UK. There were plenty of unique buildings such as the Moving Eye and the Cube Houses. It was all good inspiration for my final project." -Joe: 3D Design

" A new experience because it was the first time I had gone abroad without my family. It was great to see the different architecture compared to the UK and a good opportunity to make new friends with students from other courses."  - Firdeus: 3D Design

A huge thank you to the dedicated staff who made this trip unforgettable for the students, and to the students themselves, whose enthusiasm and professionalism represented the College with pride. We can’t wait for next year’s adventure!
