Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design learners at South Thames College recently completed an exciting employer-led live project as part of their Cityscapes curriculum. Developed by Susannah Stevens, Level 2 Arts tutor, in collaboration with Ayca Vural-Cutts, Director of the renowned architecture firm Studio AVC, the project challenged students to design innovative cardboard structures incorporating biodiversity, wellbeing, and sustainability.
Ayca Vural-Cutts, whose career spans over 20 years at prestigious firms like Foster + Partners and Zaha Hadid Architects, brought her expertise to the initiative. As Director of Studio AVC, based in Merton Abbey Mills, London, Ayca emphasized the importance of creating designs that balance functionality, aesthetic excellence, and environmental harmony.
The collaboration was made possible with the support of the South Thames College Employability Team, who worked closely with Studio AVC to ensure a meaningful and impactful experience for learners.
The competition culminated in an award ceremony led by Scott Sherriff, Head of Employability, where six outstanding learners were recognized for their exceptional work.
Winners:
🥇 1st Place: Marcel Andre Mckoy – awarded a certificate and a £20 Amazon voucher.
🥈 2nd Place: Viktoriia Kocherha and Celine Joy Atangan Salvatus.
🥉 3rd Place: Nathan Michael Morgan, Lily Sky Coates, and Cruz Valentino Richardson.
This collaboration with Studio AVC and the innovative project brief provided learners with an invaluable opportunity to engage with industry professionals, showcase their creativity, and explore sustainable design practices.
