GCSE Physics

GCSE Physics gives students knowledge about the ideas and laws controlling the behaviour of things that make up the physical world around us. Physics looks at mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism and the structure of atoms. This subject requires a good knowledge of maths. This course is for school leavers aged 16-18 and must be studied as part of the full time GCSE Retake programme.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    4 x GCSEs at D/3 or above (inc a Science based GCSE), or a Level 1 qualification in a relevant subject.

    Your GCSEs must include either maths and / or English , or a Functional Skills qualification in maths and / or English.

  • Course Content


    This is the linear 9-1 GCSE qualification. A linear qualification means that students must sit all their exams at the end of the course in June. The qualification can be taken at either Foundation Tier or Higher Tier. The lessons will involve a mixture of classroom based lectures and practical lessons in our specialist science laboratories. Students will study the following topics:

    Energy

    Electricity

    Particle model of matter

    Atomic structure

    Forces

    Waves

    Magnetism and electromagnetism

    Space physics

    A-Level Physics or a Level 3 vocational qualification in science.

    Exam Board: AQA Specification: GCSE Physics AQA 8463

    Key handouts and materials are provided however you might wish to purchase a text book or a lab coat to support your studies.

  • Assessment Details


    The course is assessed by two written exams, each worth 50% of the final marks. The exam questions will be a mixture of multiple choice: structured; closed short answer and open response questions.
