Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate Fine Art

The HNC Fine Art Course is delivered within the specialist Creative Industries Centre in central Kingston offering students invaluable on site resources, studio spaces as well as expert teaching and technical support. Starting with an introduction to the key concepts and practical skills within fine art, the course is designed to develop a strong foundation in creative professional practice, critical thinking, and the ability to work successfully as an artist. You will explore a range of traditional and contemporary fine art techniques and media, including drawing, painting, sculpture and digital arts, while also engaging with relevant contextual theory.

  • Entry Requirements


    Our typical offer is 32 UCAS points from at least two relevant A levels, or equivalent such as BTEC level 3 diplomas, Scottish Highers, the Irish Leaving Certificate or the Welsh Baccalaureate or International Baccalaureate. At least 32 UCAS points from A Level or BTEC comparable qualifications.

    Mature students with relevant experience will also be considered. Please refer to the section on recognition of prior learning below. A portfolio of relevant art and design work to be presented on-line or at interview.

    Additional requirements: References from an official email address (i.e.. NOT Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) This can be from your previous institution if you were a student in the last 4 years or from a line manager if you are currently working.

    Suitably qualified applicants will be invited to interview with a course tutor, where they will be required to further demonstrate their suitability for the course and given the opportunity to ask questions about the course.

Please note that only the courses running at Kingston College campus are eligible for Student Route visas (formally known as Tier 4).     Learning Outcomes for Assessment Units:

    A1: Concept & Development (85 credits)

    A1.1 Explore the history, theories and developments related to the area of practice. A1.2 Explore and develop ideas, based on an iterative approach to problem solving in creative practice. A1.3 Explore technical knowledge and skills necessary to support creative practice. A1.4 Explore professional knowledge, behaviours and practices within the sector. A1.5 Explore techniques, media and formats to communicate ideas and concepts for diverse audiences.

    A2: Creative Project (35 credits)

    A2.1 Apply relevant contextual knowledge to inform a creative project. A2.2 Analyse a given brief to develop creative solutions, applying an iterative development process. A2.3 Apply technical knowledge and skill in the production of a project outcome. A2.4 Demonstrate professional knowledge, behaviours and practices in response to a given brief. A2.5 Present the development process and outcomes of a creative project for a specified audience.

  • Progression Next Steps


    The Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) provides a solid grounding in fine art, which students can build on, should they decide to continue their studies beyond the Certificate stage. The next level, Level 5 Higher National Diploma, allows students to specialise within a specific career path and/or progress to degree-level study.

    For the academic year 2025-2026 the tuition fees for this course are:

    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) This is an inclusive term that enables the formal recognition, assessment and award of credit. It comprises Recognition of Prior Certified Learning and Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning.

    If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another higher education institution, you may be able to enter the course at level 5 or level 6. Other qualifications and relevant work experience may also count for academic credit. Please not that in all cases the RPL process must be formally completed before enrolment is agreed.
