Level 1 BTEC Introductory Diploma in Engineering

This qualification is a Technical Award broadly equivalent in size to one GCSE, and is designed for 16-18 students working at level 1 who want to study Engineering. It provides an introduction to some of the key themes within the sector, enabling students to develop and apply their knowledge while also acquiring a range of relevant practical, communication and technical skills.

This qualification provides an engaging and relevant introduction to the world of engineering.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to tour our excellent facilities and ask any questions you may have.

    You will be asked to provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    3 x GCSE's at grades 1 to 3 including Maths and English or previous vocational qualification.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Successfully completing the L1 Introductory Diploma will give you access to the L2 BTEC Extended Certificate in Engineering or you could also apply for an apprenticeship.

    By developing the sector knowledge and skills outlined above, students will be well prepared for progression to a Level 2 vocational course in engineering or an apprenticeship.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education and into employment.

  • Course Structure


    The Engineering Introductory Diploma has 10 different units that offer a broad introduction to Engineering topics.

    There are 4 units which help to develop your soft skills:- Being Organised Developing a Personal Progression Plan Working with Others Researching a Topic

    There are also 6 units which will help to develop your Practical Skills in Engineering:-

    Assembling Electronic Circuits Manufacturing an Engineered Product Using Hand Tools Manufacturing a Component Using Machining Processes Carrying Out Routine Mechanical Servicing of Equipment Carrying Out an Electrical Installation Producing Engineering Drawings Using CAD

  • Assessment Details


    The portfolio-based approach to assessment supports the development of communication skills such as extended writing and drafting, critical skills of analysis, teamworking, working from a prescribed brief, working to deadlines, presenting information effectively, accurately completing tasks and processes and study skills such as research and time management. These skills will help support progression to level 2 and any future chosen course.
