Kingston College Early Years (Social Work Specialism) tutor, Sum Kung, has been invited to speak at First World Congress of Clinical Social Work on Wednesday 17 September.

Sum, who teaches on the HNC Social & Community Work (Children, Young People & Families) has been invited by the CEO of CAPA Social Work to speak at the conference, which aims to enhance the impact of Clinical Social Work and building interventions that transform lives.

If you would like to learn more and to sign up for keynote lectures, panel discussions and practical workshops, visit CAPA Social Work. The Conference is delivered online and runs from 15th to 20th September.

Sum’s presentation, titled "What is being critical in critical reflection? Clinical intervention in social work field education", addresses the 'why, what, how, and what if' to work with social work students learning about clinical intervention. Sum says: “Clinical social work intervention is a double-edged sword with both a constructive and deconstructive nature. Based on my first-hand field education experience, I will explore what is meant by critical reflection in the context of learning-to-do clinical intervention, with examples of supervising social work students in the application of Narrative Therapy and Solution-focused Therapy. Interestingly, 'selves', 'personal experiences', 'insights', 'relationships & dialogue', 'social values', as well as 'curiosity and novelty' shape the clinical intervention strategies and skills that transform lives.”
