Darren is on his year 2 of a Level 5 Foundation Degree in Education and Learning
Why did you choose to enrol/study at Carshalton College?
One of the reasons I started my educational journey at Carshalton College was ease of access. It is local to my home as well as my place of work. The other reason was the offering. It offered a fantastic qualification that fits around my life.
Why did you choose your particular course?
I decided to take on the Degree in Education and Learning because I wanted to train to become a teacher and needed a degree for it. My sister had previously completed her degree through the same route and highly recommended. The course was manageable with work commitments and life balance.
What was your first impression of the College?
The college looked warm and welcoming, as were the staff. Over my two years being here, I have noticed the efforts to maintain an appropriate learning environment, catering for a variety of educational level and ability.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of course?
The best part of the course is the support, not just from the staff but from the group of like minded individuals. As we are all aiming for the same goal, we like to listen and share ideas, whilst being there for support if someone needs it.
How do you find the teaching and level of support from tutors?
The support provided by the tutor/lectures has been amazing. They have always been on hand if we need extra guidance and ensure the learning is engaging and adapted to meet our needs.
How do you manage to fit in the study around your work and family life?
Good time management is key to completing the course. Having a diary where you can allocate time for your studies, would be useful. This helped me and I have managed to keep on top of my studies, take on extra duties at work, spend time with the family and even help run local drama productions at the Cryer Arts (Acting Up Community Drama Group). Taking advantage of tutorials is also a fundamental element. These have helped keep my work on track to achieve the grades I have.
How does the course help you in your workplace setting?
The learning I have gained from the course has aided me in having a greater understanding in the education sector but also discussing ideas with other educators has helped approach various situations in different ways.
What are your goals/plans for the future or your next study/career options?
Once I have completed my third year, I aim to take on teaching training and become a primary school teacher. I know that you can have any degree to start teacher training but for me the Education and Learning degree has truly honed in on some important factors to consider when working with children and other professionals.
Do you have any advice for other potential students looking to enrol on your course?
My advice would be to DO IT! It is so worth the hard work and not only are you gaining better learning and understanding of the education sector, you will also meet some great people, who will share ideas and best pracitice.
Any other comments?
My time at Carshalton College has been enjoyable throughout and I look forward to continuing my studies for a further year here.
