GCSE Mathematics

At Kingston College, all students aged 16 -18 years of age who have not achieved at least a grade C or a grade 4 in GCSE Maths are required to study maths as part of their programme of study. The decision of whether you study GCSE Maths or Level 1 Maths Functional Skills will depend on the following criteria

If you have achieved a Grade D / 3 in Maths you will do GCSE Maths. If you have achieved Grade E / 2 or below, you will be enrolled on Functional Skill Level 1

If you have passed Level 1 Maths Functional Skills you will study GCSE Maths

If you have studied international qualifications, the decision on whether you study GCSE Maths or Level 1 Maths functional skills will depend on NARIC assessment and a diagnostic test.

This is an essential subject for progression to A Levels and Level 3 BTEC qualifications. Many universities and employers require that you have at least a C / 4 in this subject. If you are considering doing Mathematics A-Level then you will be expected to achieve Grade 6 in the GCSE.

The exam board is Pearson. The specification is Maths 1MA1

You will need to buy your own calculator and geometry set.

The course is assessed by three written exams, each worth a third of the final grade. Paper 1 is a non-calculator assessment and a calculator is allowed for Paper 2 and Paper 3.
