This course is run in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University. It qualifies you to work in the further education and skills sector, including prisons, pupil referral units and workplace settings.

The Level 5 Diploma in Further Education and Skills (Dip FES) is a part-time course designed for those already teaching in the further education and skills sector who do not yet hold a degree. Whether you are working in colleges, adult education, vocational training for 14+ learners, or private and public sector training, this qualification will support your professional growth.

By successfully completing the Dip FES, you'll gain a recognised teaching qualification that can help you advance your career. It also meets one of the eligibility criteria for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, which can further enhance your professional standing.

    You'll be observed teaching, and in the different modules you'll have to present, write essays, carry out research and keep a professional development record.

  • Entry Requirements


    Level 3 in your specialist subject (speak to us if you have a lot of industry experience instead). Level 2 in English and maths (please see the ETF approved list of English and maths Level 2 qualifications). Be able to demonstrate Level 1 ICT skills in an interview. You must already have teaching, either paid or unpaid. We will ask your employer to sign an agreement for:

    • 250 hours of placement, which includes 150 hours of teaching over two years
    • A subject specialist mentor
  • Course Content


    Each module is worth 20 credits. Topics covered on the course include:

    • The role of a teacher in this sector
    • Getting to know your learners
    • Learning theory
    • Lesson planning, delivery, assessment and feedback
    • Supporting all learners to achieve
    • Developing knowledge of your subject and how to teach it
    • How to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment
    • Promoting positive behaviour for learning
    • Developing your own English, maths and digital skills
    • Becoming a reflective teacher
    • The impact of social and economic factors and Government policy on teaching in the sector

    The successful completion of this course equips you for employment as a teacher in the further education and skills sector.

    This qualification also meets one of the eligibility criteria that may enable you to apply to undertake professional formation, which leads to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS). Eligibility criteria for professional formation is stipulated by the Society for Education and Training (SET) and published annually. See SET QTLS eligibility criteria for more information.

  • Additional Information


    The course fee for year 1 is £3,540. Learners who qualify will be able to apply for a Student Loan if they should so wish.

    Course fees for year 2 is a further £3,540.

    Following application, you will be invited to one of the following assessment/interviews sessions:

    Tue 10th June, 1pm-3pm, (Online) Mon 16th June, 2pm-4pm, (South Thames College, Wandsworth) Mon 23rd June, 5.30pm-7pm, (South Thames College, Wandsworth) Wed 9th July, 10am-12pm, (South Thames College, Wandsworth)

    Further sessions will be held from August onwards.
