UAL Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma In Creative Practice: Art, Design And Communication

This course is a practical, work related alternative to the more theoretical A levels. Employers, Universities and Higher Education Colleges recognise successful completion of this course as the equivalent of three A Level qualifications.

This is a two year course that allows you to experience a broad range of art and design disciplines in the first year and in the second year you select an area to specialise in. This course will challenge you to try new things and further develop a deeper and considered understanding of the specific visual arts pathways on offer: Fine Art Graphics & Illustration Interior, Architecture and 3D Design Fashion & Textiles Photography & Digital Design

The course includes detailed relevant contextual, theoretical research and the development of specific pathway practical skills at an advanced level. You will be expected to work with much more independence and create your own research opportunities. Projects are often focused on increasing employability and incorporate links to industry.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

    A portfolio or example of your work to demonstrate that you have the appropriate level of skill required to succeed on the course. We love to see your creativity!

    For admission on to the Extended Certificate or Diploma pathway (2x A-level equivalent over two years)

    4 x GCSE's at C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate / Extended Certificate or above in a relevant subject.

    You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE 4/C or above or L2 Functional skills.

    For admission on to the Extended Diploma pathway (3x A-level equivalent over two years)

    4 x GCSE's at C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate / Extended Certificate or above in a relevant subject at Merit or above. Including English and maths GSCE at C/4 or above or Functional skills Level 2 in English and maths.

  • Course Content


    The Extended Diploma is run across two academic years with year 1 being the Diploma and year 2 the Extended Diploma. The course consists of a series of project briefs that range in length and complexity You will also be taught new practical, theoretical and contextual skills and the opportunity to improve existing ones in-line with pathway choices. The first year will involve a full range of art and design areas and the second year emphasis is placed on choosing a pathway to specialise in for that year. You will be assessed by project work submission where feedback and grades will be given. There are no exams.

    This course enables you to produce a large body of work that incorporates many different creative problem solving opportunities that reflect a really broad range of outcomes both within specific pathways and general art and design. This reflects how the industry operates and prepares you for further study at a higher level. UCAS applications are conducted at the beginning of year two with portfolio workshops and development ready for degree course interviews during the Spring term. Other options for progression are apprenticeships or employment.

    As a student on this course you will have access to excellent, industry standard facilities which include: Drawing, painting and print-making studios. Sculpture, 3D design, fashion and textiles facilities.

    All students have access to the mac suites and photography studio

  • Progression Next Steps


    After completing this course you can progress onto a degree programme within a higher education provider, a Foundation course at Level 4 or a Higher National Certificate at Level 4. The level 3 Extended Diploma is very much geared towards future career choices and is a pathway onto higher education and a career in the visual arts. Previous learners have gone on to study a very varied range of HE courses which have included; Fine Art, Graphics, Illustration, Fashion, Architecture, Interior Design, Visual Communication, Textiles, Media, Photography, 3D Design and Product Design.

  • Additional Information


    Work Experience All students on the course are required to complete work related learning as part of their course. This may involve employer talks, classwork/projects set and/or marked by employers, student led events, visits to or work placements at relevant organisations. Each student is to complete a minimum of 36 hours work experience during the college year.

    We have a good range of facilities for printing, painting, 3D design, sculpture, fashion and textiles in our art studios. We also have use of the photography studio and Mac computer suites for digital studies.

    We provide a wide range of support to help all learners make progress. Teachers share their specialist subject experience with you while you learn.

    Materials and equipment are provided but we do encourage students to buy some of their own art materials and an A1 portfolio.

  • Course Structure


    The course comprises of 6 units in total with units 1,2 and 3 during year 1 and units 4, 5 and 6 during year 2.

    The final unit in year 1 (unit 3) and the final unit in year 2 (unit 6) are final major projects that are assessed and graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. The final grade achieved at the end of year 2 is the overall grade for the full two years of the course.

    Each unit is delivered within set projects which aim to give you a wide range of core skills and experimental problem solving opportunities in the visual arts and design.

  • Assessment Details


    Projects are varied in length and they are assessed halfway through (formative) and at the end (summative).

    You will have frequent 1:1 support from teachers to help develop your skills and work, along with group activities and class demonstrations of new skills.

    The practical tasks are mapped against the UAL awarding body criteria and will help you to develop a very wide range of skills.

    The final project of the first and second year is longer as it forms the grade for the course with those being a Pass, Merit or Distinction.

    The final grade for the whole extended programme of study is awarded at the end of year two.
