Level 1 Certificate in Art and Design

The Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Art and Design is a one-year programme delivered through exciting project-based assignments. You'll learn by doing trying materials, practising core processes, and reflecting on your progress so you can move on to Level 2 with a portfolio of work.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a 'Meet the Tutor' event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    3 x GCSEs at any grade including Maths and English or equivalent qualifications. Don't have any formal qualifications? Don't worry, let us know and we can assess you to ensure you will be able to achieve well on the course.

  • Course Content


    Learning is hands-on and clearly structured. You'll research simple ideas, plan and test, create final pieces, and evaluate your work while developing essential habits such as timekeeping, teamwork and safe workshop practice.

    You'll use drawing and painting kits (pencils, charcoal, acrylics, watercolour), craft knives and cutting mats, basic print tools, wire/armature, adhesives and PPE for safe workshop use.

    Lessons will take place in Art studios for 2D and 3D, access to a dedicated print area, Mac suite for basic digital tasks, and quiet spaces for written reflections and tutorials.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to progress onto higher level qualifications such as Level 2 Art and Design and Level 2 Digital, Games and Animation.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

  • Additional Information


    Most art materials and equipment are provided, however, students are expected to purchase a Starter Kit at the beginning of the year. More information will be provided prior to enrolment. There will also be trips and visits throughout the course which will incur some costs.

  • Assessment Details


    You are assessed through coursework only. You'll evidence planning, making, responding to feedback and evaluating outcomes. There are no written exams.
