The Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Art and Design is a one year programme delivered through exciting project based assignments. On this course you will explore and develop skills in various disciplines within general Art and Design, including Fine Art, 3D Design, Fashion, Graphic Design and Digital Design. You will develop employability and life skills through the many extra curricula activities such as work experience and live briefs. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to progress onto higher level qualifications such as Level 2 Art and Design and Level 2 Digital, Games and Animation.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a 'Meet the Tutor' event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    3 x GCSEs at any grade including Maths and English or equivalent qualifications. Don't have any formal qualifications? Don't worry, let us know and we can assess you to ensure you will be able to achieve well on the course.

  • Course Content


    The course provides a broad knowledge and understanding of 2D and 3D Art & Design through practical making. The course is unit based with continuous assessment and feedback throughout the year. The programme includes Maths and English at an applicable level.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Students who successfully complete the course can progress on to a BTEC Level 2 course in a related subject, for example, Level 2 Art and Design and Level 2 Digital, Games and Animation.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

  • Additional Information


    Most art materials and equipment are provided, however, students are expected to purchase a Starter Kit at the beginning of the year. More information will be provided prior to enrolment. There will also be trips and visits throughout the course which will incur some costs.

  • Course Structure


    This is a one year project based programme with no exams.

  • Assessment Details


    This is a project based qualification. During the course, you will complete several projects which will be assessed and will go towards your final grade. There are no exams.
