Hand Knitting for All

A design led course for those with some experience of hand knitting and crochet. You will be guided through more advanced techniques and the process of translating your ideas into a pattern.

If you're ready to take your knitting (or crochet) to the next level—learning from a designer-educator who brings craft, creativity and community together—Ruth Herring's course offers a rich, inspiring, and empowering path. Whether you're just starting or want to develop your creative voice through yarn, this is your opportunity.

Learning takes place through a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and project planning. You will explore different yarns, patterns, and stitches, and learn how to plan and produce your own knitted or crocheted pieces. Your tutor will provide individual guidance, feedback, and support throughout the course.

  • Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for all levels, including beginners. Some basic experience of handling yarn or simple knitting/crochet stitches may be helpful but is not essential. Learners who wish to develop further sewing or textile skills may also be interested in our Clothes Making or Soft Furnishings courses.

  • Course Content

At the end of the course you will be able to:

    • Knit in rows using at least two stitches

    • Knit at least one cable stitch

    • Increase and decrease stitches for shaping

    • Join seams and use different finishing techniques

    • Identify techniques and use technical language

    • Design and make your own simple project

    • Have the opportunity to share skills and ideas.
  • Progression Next Steps

Many students go on to make and sell pieces commercially.

  • Additional Information

This is a non-accredited course, designed to help you develop practical and creative skills in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Basic materials and tools will be available, but learners are encouraged to bring their own yarns, needles, hooks, and patterns if they wish to work on personal projects. Further details will be provided at the first session.

Please bring a notebook or sketchbook to record patterns, samples, and design ideas.

If you are on a low wage, unemployed or claim Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) then you can have a reduction.

Ruth Herring is a professional knit and crochet designer, pattern writer, author and teacher. She currently works with leading, award winning British designers creating knit and crochet prototypes for their runway shows.

  • Course Structure

This course runs over nine weeks, with sessions held once per week. It is designed for learners to progress from design planning and technical understanding to creating a finished knitting or crochet project. Each week combines demonstrations, guided practice, and independent work.

  • Assessment Details

Learner progress will be assessed through a combination of:

*Tutor Feedback: Ongoing guidance and constructive feedback during class activities, swatch creation, and project work.

*Homework/Independent Practice: Tasks to reinforce skills learned in class, including swatches, pattern drafting, and small practice projects.

*Learner Self-Assessment: Reflection on personal progress, evaluation of completed work, and identification of areas for improvement to support independent learning.

*This approach ensures learners receive continuous support, develop self-awareness of their skills, and are able to apply techniques confidently in their final projects.

  • Teaching and Learning

Learning takes place through a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and individual project work. You will have the opportunity to plan and create your own projects under the guidance of an experienced tutor.
