Access to Higher Education Diploma - Engineering

Access qualifications provide an alternative route to University or Higher Education for students aged over 19, who have keen interest in Engineering and Maths and a high level of commitment to studying the course.

This one year course is ideal for:

  • Those with employment experience wishing to take a degree or an equivalent Higher Education course to progress in their careers
  • Learners wishing to change subject area having already gained some academic or vocational qualifications
  • Learners who have studied but not completed academic or vocational subjects or do not have suitable grades to enter university
  • Learners who have been out of education for some time and who now wish to re-commence their studies.

Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    Candidates must have GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4 or above, a GCSE English at grade C/4 and ideally, but not necessarily, GCSE C/4 or above in Science/Physics as well.

    A successful interview and Entry Maths test are required.

  • Course Content


    The course consists of units designed to provide a balance of specialist subject knowledge with essential study skills to prepare you for the academic and practical rigours of undergraduate study in Engineering.

    To obtain a Pass in this Access course, you will need to achieve a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3. Total credits required: 60 for the Diploma.

  • Progression Next Steps


    On successful completion of this programme, students may progress onto a range of Engineering courses, including Maths and Physics courses at university. Alternatively, students may progress onto the HNC in Engineering offered by Kingston College.

    The Access to HE Diploma - Engineering is taught at Kingston College so is ideal for those based in South West London and Surrey.

  • Course Structure


    To be awarded a diploma, learners must achieve a total of 60 Credits in 19 units studied at Level 3. 5 of the units are not graded and worth 15 Credits (3 Credits each). These are Study Skills units (Report Writing, Speaking & Listening Skills, Finding & Reading Information, Note-taking & Note-making and Exam Skills).

    14 of the units are graded (Pass, Merit or Distinction) and worth 45 Credits. The graded units are:

    Mathematics units worth 21 Credits:

    • Algebra - 3 Credits
    • Trigonometry - 3 Credits
    • Graphs, Polynomials & Series - 3 Credits
    • Logarithms, Exponentials & Complex Numbers - 3 Credits
    • Vectors & Matrices - 3 Credits
    • Calculus - 6 Credits

    Engineering units worth 12 Credits:

    • Basic Electronic Skills and Measurements - 3 Credits
    • Electrical Circuit Theory - 3 Credits
    • Engineering Materials - 3 Credits
    • Manual & Machine Tools - 3 Credits

    Science units worth 6 Credits:

    • Motion, Energy and Forces - 3 Credits
    • Thermal Properties of Matter - 3 Credits

    Computing units worth 6 Credits:

    • Introduction to CAD - 3 Credits
    • Spreadsheets - 3 Credits
  • Assessment Details


    A wide range of assessment techniques are used throughout the course which are designed to give learners experience of different types of assessment commonly found in Higher Education courses.

    Types of assessment may include, but are not limited to: in-class tests (exams), written assignments, laboratory reports, practical tasks, and presentations.
