Crochet

A design led course for those with some experience of hand knitting and crochet. You will be guided through more advanced techniques and the process of translating your ideas into a pattern.

If you're ready to take your knitting (or crochet) to the next level; learning from a designer-educator who brings craft, creativity and community together; Ruth Herring's course offers a rich, inspiring, and empowering path. Whether you're just starting or want to develop your creative voice through yarn, this is your opportunity.

Learning takes place through a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and project planning. You will explore different yarns, patterns, and stitches, and learn how to plan and produce your own knitted or crocheted pieces. Your tutor will provide individual guidance, feedback, and support throughout the course.

  • Entry Requirements


    This course is suitable for all levels, including beginners. Some basic experience of handling yarn or simple knitting/crochet stitches may be helpful but is not essential. Learners who wish to develop further sewing or textile skills may also be interested in our Clothes Making or Soft Furnishings courses.

    If you are on a low wage, unemployed or claiming benefits you may qualify for a reduction.

  • Additional Information


    This is a non-accredited course, designed to help you develop practical and creative skills in a relaxed and friendly environment.

    Basic materials and tools will be available, but learners are encouraged to bring their own yarns, needles, hooks, and patterns if they wish to work on personal projects. Further details will be provided at the first session.

    Please bring a notebook or sketchbook to record patterns, samples, and design ideas.

    Ruth Herring is a professional knit and crochet designer, pattern writer, author and teacher. She currently works with leading, award winning British designers creating knit and crochet prototypes for their runway shows.

  • Course Structure


    The course runs over nine sessions per term, combining tutor-led demonstrations with plenty of hands-on practice. Each session focuses on building your confidence and developing your techniques as you work on individual and group projects.
