Access to Higher Education Diploma - Humanities, Social Science and Law

An alternative route to University or Higher Education for students aged 19+ who have been out of education for at least a year, Access to Higher Education Diploma - Humanities & Social Sciences is designed to give adult students, who may have left school early or have been out of education for a number of years, the opportunity to develop academic skills, confidence and knowledge before applying to university. This course requires a minimum of 90% attendance and the successful completion of 45 Level 3 credits and 15 Level 3 credits.

This is an intensive course of study and requires a high level of commitment, including several hours of self study in the student's own time. Day time study is approximately 12-14 hours delivered over two or three days a week in college: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, depending on specialist chosen subjects, during academic year 2023-2024.

The Access to HE Diplomas at Kingston College are nationally recognised qualifications and are awarded by The Open College Network London Region (OCNLR).

  • Entry Requirements


    All students are expected to have English Language GCSE grade-C/4 OR the equivalent (not functional skills level-2) before partaking on the course. If you do not have GCSE Maths at grade C/4 you may be given the opportunity to study this alongside your Access programme to achieve a grade 4 or above.

    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other to include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference/school report.

    Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.

  • Course Content


    The programme is made up of a mixture of specialist subjects and a core support programme. All students will choose one lead and two further specialist subjects from Law, English, Sociology and Psychology. The remainder of the programme is comprised of Study Skills which are designed to provide all students with essential skills underpinning learning on the course and in undergraduate study for example note-taking, research and presentation skills.

    This course requires excellent time management, maturity of approach and a high level of commitment throughout the year. Students will be supported in their studies and UCAS application through a tutorial session.

  • Progression Next Steps


    The majority of students on this diploma have gone on to study Law, English, Psychology, Sociology or subjects in related disciplines like International Relations, Politics, History or Philosophy.

    One year, part time (September start), typically three days a week in college.

    The Access to HE Diploma in Humanities, Social Science and Law course is popular and applicants are advised to apply in advance. Please be aware that if you do not meet Home Student Residency status, you will be charged at the higher level fee. You may be eligible for help with fees and/or childcare, depending on your circumstances.

    If you are age 19 or over you may qualify for a student loan that will pay for your tuition fees. This loan will not need to be repaid if you progress onto Higher Education and complete an eligible higher education qualification.     This course is not available to students who require a visa to study in the UK. Students who have qualifications from abroad and need a recognised English language qualification can take an IELTS test.
