Introduction to Clothes making for Beginners
Clothes making is a great skill to have if you're interested in working in fashion or going on to do a higher level fashion course. This practical introductory course is suitable for complete beginners or sewers with a little experience. It will teach you the basic professional techniques of clothes making.
You will be required to buy Bernina bobbins, pins, thread, hand needles and a sewing pattern on this course.

Course Content
By the end of the course, you'll be able to:-
Thread and use a sewing machine

Choose appropriate fabrics for your projects

Finish raw edges

Understand how to prepare and machine an elastic casing

Understand how to prepare and machine a hem
- Use a shop bought sewing pattern to make a pair of elasticated waist trousers, shorts or a skirt. Alternative patterns may be possible with the agreement of the tutor

This course will provide you with a foundation of skills needed on a fashion, clothes-making or sewing course. You can further your knowledge by taking the Advanced Clothes-making course at the Tooting Centre on Fridays. Alternatively you can advance to a clothes making, fashion.You might explore other clothes-making, textile or craft courses at South Thames College.
You might go onto employment in a business that makes or alters garments; or build your own self employed clothes making business.

What is needed for the course:- Tape measure
- Sharp 2H pencil (preferably mechanical pencils with a 0.5mm or 0.7mm lead)
- Rubber
- Sharpener

- French curve or a set square (optional)
- A4 ring binder

Course Structure
There will be individual and group tuition, with teacher led discussions and demonstrations. -

Teacher feedback, individual learning plans, student and peer self-assessment. -
Teaching and Learning
Learning takes place through a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and individual project work. You will have the opportunity to plan and create your own projects under the guidance of an experienced tutor. There will be time in each session for discussion, feedback, and developing your practical techniques.
