On Friday 11 March, Level 3 Plumbing Students visited a 50-storey office development in Bishopsgate which will be the new home of Goldman Sachs’s headquarters. On completion, this will be the 3rd highest building in the financial sector of the City of London.
The Bishopsgate, development was at an ideal stage for the students to view the plumbing systems within large scale development.
The day started in the boardroom where the Construction Manager provided details of the site development stages with a discussion around health & safety factors and a chance for a Q&A.
The students were taken to the lower basement where they were shown the main plumbing piping that connected the site to the main sewerage system under the City of London; they were shown the different usage of the industrial water tanks; the different types of pipework and how the set-up of recyclable system works via a collection of rainwater, which is then to be used for the WC systems throughout the building.
An industrial lift was taken up to the 33rd Floor which was a complete shell and only the floors, internal walls and the basic plumbing had been completed. There were no external walls and the only protection was netting to keep them from the outside of the building. The 18th and 22nd floor were also visited, where they viewed high spec fittings and shown the difference between domestic and commercial plumbing.
There was a lot of discussion around the types of material used, and the different grips and fixing pipework to unusual areas of the build. The building is being built like a staircase and has been described as looking like Jenga building blocks.
The students were really impressed and felt energised that a development like this could be their future place of work!
