Talented BTEC Art and Design student, Josie, has also written, illustrated and published a magical children’s book. Read about it here.

Why did you choose to study a BTEC and why did you choose Kingston College?

I chose to study a BTEC because I’ve always learnt much more from creating and doing practical tasks, and I’ve always wanted to attend Kingston College - even when I was a kid I remember driving past the CIC and telling my mum it’s where I’d end up! At 15 I moved abroad for a while so thought that would no longer be possible but I moved back to the UK at 18 and managed to secure a place on my art course.

Favourite part of your course?

My favourite part of my course has definitely been learning how to use all sorts of different methods to create. Before joining Kingston College, I was always nervous to try new things or to think outside the box to experiment and this course has given me the ability to learn how to take artistic risks.

Is College life what you expected? Have there been any surprises?

College life is definitely not what I had expected, my early years of education were quite awful in full honesty. At 16 I swore I’d never go back into any form of education again, but since joining college I can confidently say the last two years have been the best of my life. College feels so different to what I had experienced before, the students and teachers are all so kind and fun and the work is always so rewarding to get stuck into!

Any advice to those thinking about applying for your course?

My advice would be to just not shy away from getting stuck into the course work, the more I’ve engaged with my work the more I’ve gotten back out of it.

Any amazing tutors or met great new friends?

My tutors, Jason and Hayley, from day one have both been incredibly kind and supportive of me and all of my work. Every step of the way I am very thankful to both of them. And I’ve made so many friends, but in particular my closest friends Amelie, Eloise and Calvin - meeting them has been a game changer! I’ll really miss all working around our studio table together each week.

Your plans after you complete your course?

I’m planning to continue self-publishing my children’s books in my spare time, alongside taking part in various online illustration courses. And I’ll be returning to the CIC in September to join as a part of the Learning Support staff team.
