Safeguarding

On Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 October, ESOL learners at South Thames College’s Wandsworth, including both adult and under-19 groups took part in inspiring workshops delivered by Damien Arness Dalton, a UK Parliament Outreach Officer for London.

The interactive sessions gave students a clear and accessible insight into how the UK Parliament works, the roles of MPs and the House of Lords, and the many ways citizens can get involved in the democratic process. The workshops were politically neutral and closely linked to the British Values of Democracy and the Rule of Law.

Teachers and learners shared very positive feedback, describing the sessions as engaging, informative and eye-opening. Many students said they came away with a stronger understanding of how Parliament affects their lives and how they can play an active role in shaping society.

Student Daria reflected:

“I think this meeting was a very useful way to show students how Parliament works. I’m not very good at remembering things that are far from my own experience, so taking part in the activity really helped me remember what we were talking about. I also learned how interestingly Members of Parliament vote by saying ‘Aye’ and later I read why they do it this way. I found out how a bill becomes a law and learned new words like ‘constituency’.”

Damien’s visit formed part of the college’s ongoing commitment to offering enriching learning experiences that connect classroom learning with real-world understanding and participation in British society.
