Meet Access to HE - Science student, Toni-Marie, who is progressing to an Apprenticeship in Audiology. She says about Access: "The rewards are huge. It opens doors you might have thought were closed and gives you the confidence to walk through them."
Why did you choose Kington College?
I originally attended Kingston College between 2009 and 2012 studying BTEC Performing Arts – Dance and absolutely loved my time there. So, when I returned more recently to study the Access to Higher Education in Science, I had high expectations and this time round did not disappoint.
Why did you choose to study an Access to HE Diploma?
I chose to study Access to Higher Education because I wanted to take the next step in my academic and professional journey. Life had taken me in different directions after I first attended college, but I knew I still had ambitions to achieve. The Access course felt like the right move to help me transition back into education with purpose and focus. I specifically chose Kingston College again because of my great previous experience and the supportive learning environment I remembered.
What are your plans now and how has Access helped you achieve them?
The course itself has been informative and fast-paced, which kept me on my toes in the best way. It challenges you, but in doing so, it also gives you the push you need to succeed. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who feels they need that structure and momentum to get back into learning or aim for university. I’m planning to do an Apprenticeship in Audiology. The Access course has been crucial in preparing me for that. It’s helped me rebuild my academic confidence, improved my study skills, and given me a strong foundation for the degree ahead.
Favourite part of the course and how was College life?
One of my favourite parts of the course was doing experiments and having group study sessions. It really sparked my interest and reminded me why I wanted to return to education in the first place. College life was pretty much what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to settle back in, even after so many years. The support from staff and the camaraderie among classmates made it a really enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Advise for anyone considering Access?
My advice to anyone thinking of applying for the Access course, go for it. It’s intense, but if you’re ready to put the work in, the rewards are huge. It opens doors you might have thought were closed and gives you the confidence to walk through them.
There have been some fantastic opportunities during my time here, and the tutors have been amazing - supportive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about helping students succeed. I’ve also met some great new friends along the way, which made the experience even better for myself.
