As part of Colleges Week 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the young people who are gaining valuable vocational and academic skills, building confidence, and shaping their futures.
Esmond is an Engineering student who has progressed from Level 1 to 3 over three years at College and is supported as a high-needs learner. Esmond recently completed a successful work experience placement with National Rail, where his diligence and strong analytical skills were highlighted as key strengths and his contribution was described as professional and highly effective.
To ensure a smooth and safe work experience, Merton College worked closely with National Rail and our Merton Learner Support Team to confirm that all health and safety procedures, support arrangements and reasonable adjustments were in place before the placement began.
During his time at London Bridge station, Esmond spent three days shadowing a Customer Service Assistant, gaining an understanding of station operations, observing control‑room activity, and meeting staff across the team. He then undertook three further days in the office, focusing on training and compliance tasks.
National Rail provided highly positive feedback on Esmond’s performance, noting his ability to quickly understand and retain information:“Esmond spent time reviewing the station training tracker, identifying staff whose e-Learning had lapsed or was due to lapse. He completed this exceptionally well and with great accuracy. This came more naturally to him than it does to me — and it is my day job. He is intelligent and has an excellent memory for data. By the next day, he remembered everything and independently emailed all staff without needing further explanation.”
Following his work experience placement, Esmond will start looking to apply for an Apprenticeship with National Rail once he completes his course later this year. Congratulations to Esmond on this achievement and the continued progress he has made since beginning his Engineering studies at Level 1. His success demonstrates the value of inclusive support, employer partnerships, and high‑quality vocational learning opportunities. Well done Esmond!
