Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning

Whether you're new to the education sector or already working in a school, this course will provide you with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments.

It is aimed at learners working in roles that support pupils' learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

  • Entry Requirements

You will need to attend an interview and initial assessment and be able to demonstrate at least a level 1 or 2 in English speaking, reading and writing, and at least a level 1 in maths. You also need to have a paid or voluntary teaching assistant placement of at least six hours a week for the duration of the course. This can be in a primary, secondary or special school but must be in a year 1 class or above. It cannot be in a nursery or reception class. We can carry out the interview and assessment before you arrange your placement, but the placement must be secured and evidenced before you can fully enrol.

  • Course Content

The Level 2 Certificate covers 11 units of work, including: schools and colleges as organisations; children and young people's development; safeguarding; equality, diversity and inclusion; maintaining relationships; supporting health and safety; supporting positive behaviour; contributing to teamwork; children and young people's play and leisure; promoting an effective learning environment; providing displays in a learning environment.

We also run a series of short NCFE CACHE qualifications within the course to help support your development and provide additional evidence of your competence to support children and young people in schools.

  • Progression Next Steps

Learners can progress onto the Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or into the workforce.

  • Course Structure

You will attend college for 3 hours per week throughout the academic year and build your portfolio through regular submission of written assignments. Units of study also require experience in the classroom, allowing you to apply theory to practice and to discuss placement experiences whilst at college.

  • Assessment Details

The course is assessed by a portfolio of evidence for both knowledge and skills. You'll be visited in the workplace by an assessor who will observe you supporting teaching and learning.
